It was announced a while ago now that there's going to be a new installment of the Friday the 13th franchise. Everyone cheered. You could hear the ripple of applause echo across the internet. But guess who's hands were not joyfully clapping together in jubilation? Mine.
Why? Because the proposed re-imagining is apparently hell bent on bringing new material. Namely the introduction of Jason's father, which, I imagine, in turn will lead us some kind of feeling of temporary empathy for either Jason or his mother. More than likely he'll either be an out-of-work drunk, abusive husband and father, or all of the above. Worse still, he could be a simple cardboard cut out of (God bless him) good old Sheriff Hoyt. And that changes the dynamics of the film entirely, I think.
The truth is, we all know the lore of the films (even if you don't it usually doesn't matter, because 5 minutes of each film is usually always dedicated to explaining it), and we're happy with it.
Jason isn't a scary character. He just isn't. He, like his mother before him, is nothing more than a killing machine fueled only by a sense of revenge.
Maybe someone should work on making Jason scary.
Or maybe Hollywood should strive to find new, original, horror stories to tell.
God knows there's enough fresh blood out there waiting for a shot,
Of course, if I'm wrong then I'll apologize. But, honestly, I don't think I will be.
Watch this space.
