Everyone
loves a freebie, right?
Yeah, of
course they do; everyone loves something for nothing. It’s human nature.
So imagine
my delight when I see someone I follow offering one of their short stories
(maybe a novelette, it would really depend on your definition) for free, for
Kindle, for a limited time. I won’t tell you who it was, but suffice to say he
has something of a following .
Naturally, I
took to the link and downloaded it. I didn’t read it straight away; I had other
books (both physical and electronic) I wanted to get through first, so I let it
mellow for a while.
Needless-to-say
I finally got around to reading it with some expectation considering his
following, and what I found was a story that I could barely bring myself to
read. Oh, I know how it sounds and all, and I really don’t mean to be bitchy,
but, man, that thing was awful.
I’ve had it
open on my Kindle now for the last three days, and I still can’t bring myself
to get any further in. I just don’t want to do it. But I do want to know what
makes him so appealing, even if I can’t immediately see it for myself from the
first couple of pages.
What I’m
hoping to realize is that I may have missed something, somewhere, along the way
and that his best is yet to come (this guy has quite a few books out there),
but right now I’m doubtful.
I will
finish it though, eventually.
I just hope in the meantime I don’t discover reading the telephone book more of an enthralling read.
