I’ve been thinking about the deadline I set myself way back in January,
and about how far I’ve come since then, and I have to confess that it’s not as
far as I had hoped.
For those of you who missed the post, I had originally stated that I
would have a collection of novellas out by the middle of the year as well as a
completed novel that I planned to have in a finished state and accepted by a
publisher. Bold statements, I know. Needless to say neither has happened yet.
Not that I haven’t tried, because I have. Countless times.
This is, in part, due to several re-write (of one particular story) and
ill-defined realised storylines therein.
The collection will still happen though, eventually, but on a much
smaller scale.
I’ll tease you with the titles and descriptions later.
My original intention was to release four or five novellas (roughly 25,000
words each) in a single collection. A nice idea, I’m sure you’ll agree, but I
doubt it will work out that way.
I like the stories – of course, I am going to say that – yet I’m still inclined
to release them as individual titles rather than in a collection that would
possibly amount to 100,000 words.
And to rub salt into the wounds, my muse has have given me replacement
stories for the collection. Just like that with no warning. Shorter ones
roughly around the 15,000 word mark at most.
I know, it all sounds very odd. But don’t worry, it all makes sense in
my head.
Still, I like the idea of a big collection, something the reader can
really get their teeth into, however it seems a wiser strategy (to me, at
least) to separate the three larger stories into single volumes.
But one thing is for sure: I’ll never mock another writer who suffers
the same plight. Rewrites aside, the muse is a canny bitch ... hitting you as
hard as she can whenever she’s able.
I’ll keep you posted with future developments. I do not expect they
will change, but you never know ... the muse may once again decide to slap me
around the chops and leave me baffled.
Thanks for reading.
